How Often Should You Do a Fire Risk Assessment? A Simple Timeline

Fire risk assessments (FRAs) are not just a legal requirement, they are the foundation of a safe and compliant building. At Assured Fire Safety Consultancy, we regularly help building owners, facilities managers, and duty holders stay on top of their responsibilities. But one question comes up time and again:

“How often should I do a Fire Risk Assessment?”

Let’s break it down into simple timelines and practical advice, so you know exactly when and why to review your FRA and how Assured Fire Safety Consultancy can help.

What Does the Law Say?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005every workplace and non-domestic premises must have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment in place. If you’re the responsible person (building owner, employer, or manager), you are legally required to:

How Often Should You Review a Fire Risk Assessment?

While there’s no fixed timeframe written into legislation, best practice (and most enforcement guidance) recommends:

Every 12 Months – Annual Review

You should review your fire risk assessment at least once every year to ensure it reflects the current risks. Even if nothing major has changed, a review provides documented due diligence.

Every 3-5 Years – Full Reassessment

For most buildings, a new full FRA is advised every 3-5 years, depending on, building complexity, fire safety systems, risk level and occupant vulnerability.

Immediately – After Significant Change or Incident

You must review or redo your FRA immediately if there has been any significant changes (e.g. layout changes, use of premise changes, staff numbers or working patterns change significantly, there’s been a fire, near miss, or enforcement notice.

At Assured, we carry out full FRAs ranging from simple low-risk environments to Tier 3 complex sites such as high-rises, multi-use facilities, and estates with multiple access points.

We tailor our assessments and advice to your site, risk profile, and responsibilities – not a one-size-fits-all template.
